Car insurance rates vary drastically by state

Posted on January 6th, 2011 No Comments

A new report released by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, an insurance regulation organization, has named the states with the highest and the lowest average car insurance premiums.

Compared to the national average of $903 per year, the highest and lowest state averages were:

  • Louisiana, with an average premium of $1275
  • Iowa, with an average premium of $616

The report shows how dramatically insurance rates tend to vary by state, with the highest rates costing twice as much as the lowest rates. However, rates should not vary this dramatically simply based on state, showing that people in some places are paying far too much for insurance.

Even if you live in a state with a high average premium, you can find the very cheap car insurance you need by comparing rates between top insurers in your area. To find the quotes you need and to start saving money on your monthly rates, contact Very Cheap Car Insurance.

Studies have shown that drivers traveling 5 to 15 miles per hour above or below the speed limit are 6 times more likely to be in a car accident.  Speeding can be even more dangerous for pedestrians.  85 percent of pedestrian accidents with vehicles traveling at 40 miles per hour resulted in a fatality.

Steps to take after an accident

Posted on November 12th, 2010 No Comments

If you have ever been in a car or other vehicular accident, you know that accidents can leave you feeling startled and overwhelmed.  It is important to know the steps to take after an accident to help minimize these feelings and avoid any unnecessary complications.

The first thing to do after an accident is to take a few moments to take a deep breath and calm your nerves.  When you are ready, step out of the vehicle and make sure all other drivers and passengers are safe.  If  you have doubts about anybody’s health or safety, call 9-1-1.  Next, carefully check your vehicle for any damage.

Then, exchange information with other drivers.  The most important information to collect is a driver’s name, phone number, address, insurance company and license plate number.  After obtaining the other drivers’ information, call a local police station to file an accident report.  Filing an accident report is a good idea even in the most minor of accidents.  As soon as possible, contact your insurance company to inform them of the accident.

If you are considering purchasing auto insurance to better protect you in the case of an accident, contact Very Cheap Car Insurance to get an online cheap car insurance rate comparison today.

Auto Accidents Involving Deer Increase in Autumn

Posted on October 27th, 2010 No Comments

In most states October means deer hunting season, but car insurance companies say your more likely to encounter a deer on the road than in the forest.

According to a report released by the Highway Loss Data Institute, there were more than two million incidents involving a vehicle and deer collision between 2008 and 2010. The vast majority of these collisions occurred in October and November, the report says. The mating and migration seasons for deer fall in autumn, and as they move across the county side, the colors of the foliage helps to camouflage these animals, which can cause problems for both hunters and drivers.

Car insurance companies remind people who drive in rural areas to exercise caution in the fall months, when animal collisions increase.

Drivers should always watch for animals in the roadway, and heed deer crossing signs. If you have auto insurance, you are most likely covered for an accident involving an animal. Check with your insurance provider if you are unsure of your coverage.

Overlooked Car Insurance Discounts

Posted on October 21st, 2010 No Comments

Car insurance can be expensive, with premiums varying from state to state, but there are discounts available that many people may not be aware of.

A multi-policy or multi-vehicle discount is relatively common among car insurers. Consumers who have multiple policies with the same insurance company can receive auto insurance discounts ofter exceeding 10 percent. Policies which qualify for the discount can include a homeowners’ insurance policy, a second auto insurance policy, and, depending on the provider, a health or life insurance policy.

Another often overlooked car insurance discount is the low mileage rate. Many insurance providers offer large discounts for low mileage vehicles. For consumers who work from home or use public transportation as part of a commute, the low mileage discount can somtimes be as high as 40 percent.

Study: New York Drivers Angriest in U.S.

Posted on October 14th, 2010 No Comments

New York has overtaken Miami as the city with the angriest drivers, according to a survey released Tuesday.

According to the AutoVantage Road Rage Survey, New York is home to the angriest, most aggressive drivers. Miami topped the annual poll for the last four years, but participants voted New York drivers the most likely to tailgate, speed, honk their horns, overreact, and lose their tempers. “New Yorkers were most likely to wave their fists or arms,” said Michael Blush, a marketing consultant who commissioned the survey.

“They were most likely to lay on the horn and they were most likely to make some sort of obscene gesture.

Dallas/Fort Worth came in second as the worst road rage city, followed by Detroit, Atlanta, and the Twin Cities. Portland and Cleveland were voted to have the most courteous and considerate drivers, followed by Baltimore, Sacramento, and Pittsburgh. “The real surprise to me,” Bush said, “is that there is no geographic way to break down road rage. It’s very much on a city-by-city basis, as opposed to geographic area.”

No matter where your city ranks, auto insurance is a necessity. If you are in the market for very cheap auto insurance, please fill out our simple contact form for more information.

Motorists Urged to Check Brake Lights as Winter Nears

Posted on October 7th, 2010 No Comments

Consumers with car insurance policies for young drivers have been urged to check the condition of their brake lights.

according to Ron Waldock, an independent inspector for the British equivalent of the American Automobile Association, drivers will face more hazardous road conditions over the coming months.

The change from autumn to winter, in addition to daylights savings time, can create treacherous roadways. Inexperienced drivers need to exercise caution on icy roads, and Waldock reminds motorists that brake lights make vehicles visible at night.

“Our advice would be to regularly check that all your lights are clean and working correctly to make sure you are as visible as possible,” Waldock said.

Research by an online car insurance company revealed that about one in 15 cars, motorcycles, vans and trucks are missing at least one brake light. Working brake lights are not only a legal requirement, but also a necessary safety measure.

Teen Drivers: The Facts

Posted on September 30th, 2010 No Comments

The risk of car accidents is highest among teenagers in the United States.

According to a motor vehicle safety report on teenage drivers published by the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the risk of car accidents is higher among 16 to 19 year-olds than among any other age group. Per mile driven, drivers in this age range are four times more likely than older drivers to crash.

The risk of car accidents among males in their teens is higher than their female counterparts. In 2006, the motor vehicle accident rate for male drivers and passengers was almost two times that of females. Teens driving with passengers are also at greater risk for accidents. The risk increases with the number of teenage passengers in a vehicle.

Lufkin, TX to Tow Uninsured Vehicles

Posted on September 22nd, 2010 No Comments

Police in a Texas town will begin towing uninsured vehicles this week.

According to officials with the Lufkin Police Department in Texas, 21.65 percent of vehicles in texas are uninsured. Police chief Scot Marcotte first discussed a plan to reduce the number of uninsured drivers with city council members in June, and the measure was approved in July.

Under the new ordinance, drivers who are involved in an accident and are unable to provide proof of insurance, or drivers who are pulled over and issued a citation for lack of insurance, would have their vehicles towed. The driver would be required to purchase insurance, take proof of insurance

to a municipal court and pay a fee. The driver would also be responsible for all towing and storage costs.

“The goal of the ordinance and the enforcement is to make sure that every car in Lufkin is insured,” Smith said.
